I was born and raised in Dublin, Ireland. When I was sixteen I watched my brother begin to struggle with a substance abuse issue at a time when heroin and ecstasy abuse was rampant in Ireland. As the years passed, I witnessed the effects of his addiction on his life and on those of us who loved him dearly. This experience affected me profoundly and inspired me to help those affected by addiction in Ireland. Years later, I became certified as a drug and alcohol counselor/therapist and began my career in a small drug addiction treatment center.
I then received a BA in Counseling and Psychotherapy from the Irish College of Humanities and Applied Sciences and later obtained a Masters of Social Work from the Catholic University of America.
I have over fifteen years of professional experience in a variety of behavioral health settings, such as inpatient, outpatient and private practice. In addition to substance abuse issues, I have developed extensive skill in treating anxiety, trauma and depression.
After a loss in my family eleven years ago, I took a sabbatical, which turned into a two year adventure surfing and traveling in South and Central America. During this trip I met my wife and, after a brief return to Ireland, we relocated to the Bay Area (via Washington D.C.). We now reside in Oakland with our daughters.
In my free time, I am an avid surfer, a modest hiker, and a lover of new adventures (though since starting a family my adventures have been limited to changing diapers!).

My aspiration to become a therapist began at age 9, when I offered support to my neighbor and friend, who wanted to run away from home. As an only child with a keen sense of observation, I gained early insight into the complexities of abuse, addiction, and dysfunction, fostering a desire to assist others. Over time, I recognized that I, too, needed help. I learned the importance of self-awareness and personal growth, understanding the value of boundaries, supportive relationships, and therapy in developing a healthy sense of self-worth. This journey now inspires me to empower others to embrace their own stories and self-acceptance.
I have over 15 years of professional experience specializing in trauma, multicultural and racial issues, and addiction treatment, both in facility management and private practice. Having spent my career in the Bay Area, I recently expanded my practice to Seattle and am licensed in both states.
In my personal time, I enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking and snowboarding, barre classes, playing bass guitar, reading, spending time with friends and family and practicing mindfulness with my dog, Biggie Smalls.

I grew up in a small midwestern factory town and have spent much of my adulthood traveling and living in different parts of the globe, landing me most recently in the Bay Area. Before becoming a therapist, I spent several years in community-based mental health and behavioral health administration, which gave me a deeper understanding of how systemic issues intersect with personal struggles. I’ve worked with clients from a wide variety of backgrounds, and I am particularly passionate about serving individuals and families impacted by substance use, trauma, and structural injustice.
What draws me to this work is complex and still evolving. I come to the field of behavioral health and addiction recovery from a deeply personal place—through my own experiences, the journeys of people I love, and a broader commitment to addressing the stigma and systemic harm that often accompanies substance use. These layers continue to shape my understanding of healing as both an individual and collective process.
My therapeutic work integrates mindfulness, DBT, CBT, somatic practices, and comes from a culturally integrative and social justice-informed lens. In this way, I take a grounded approach in my work, aiming to help you find practical resources in your community, develop useful coping skills, and strengthen your support network.
